John Allemeier, Deep Water: The Murder Ballads
Albany Records, TROY 1488 The three pieces on this Compact Disc are the results of a collaborative effort between composer John Allemeier and dancer/choreographer E.E. Balcos, who together created an evening-length, dance-theater work based on three murder ballads—folksongs that describe homicides and their aftermaths. *Critics Choice Recording - American Record Guide January/February 2015 Review 1: Music is Good Review 2: American Record Guide Review 3: Texas Public Radio Review 4: Charlotte Observer |

Taking Charge
ASSEM3LY Lindsey Goodman, flute Scott Christian, percussion Anna Waltner, piano Albany Records, TROY 1676 Assem3ly is a dynamic trio championing chamber music of our time for flute, piano, and percussion. Comprised of flutist Lindsey Goodman, pianist Anne Waltner, and percussionist Scott Christian, Assem3ly commissions and performs new works from established and emerging composers and this recording is typical of their programming. Distinguished composer Joseph Schwantner's Taking Charge opens the recording, followed by Bolamkin, a work by John Allemeier. Ty Alan Emerson's Caliban Ascendent precedes the final work on the recording by Randall Woolf: Between Me, Myself, And The Lamp Post. The performances sparkle with intensity and commitment. A recording of music for an unusual, but very effective grouping of instruments. Review 1: The Flutist Quarterly |

Insights, New Music for Double Bass
Anthony Stoops, double bass Albany Records, TROY 1457 With this recording Anthony Stoops embarks on an unlikely project. He wants nothing less than to enlarge and intensify a corpus of solo double bass music that he hopes will solemnize the double bass as an important solo instrument, a role denied the instrument except in the fevered dreams of the instrument’s tiny cadre of virtuosi. Oddly Stoops has indicated his knowledge that his mission will fail, just as the similar missions of past virtuosi of the instrument have failed. This recording features compositions by Ching-chu Hu, David Maki, Marvin Lamb, and John Allemeier. |

Simultaneous Worlds
Due East (Erin Lesser, flute and Greg Beyer, percussion) Albany Records, TROY 1215 Although the six pieces that make up this program were not composed with this purpose in mind, each work explores different ways to combine the sounds of flute and percussion. Two of humanity’s oldest instruments, they remain favorites of contemporary composers. Stylistically, the pieces on this CD vary greatly, but they also complement each other by showing manifold possibilities that flute and percussion duos offer, from evoking folkloric idioms to exploring new sounds through special performance effects and non-traditional timbres. This program makes use of a variety of flutes, from the C flute (the standard flute) to alto flute, piccolo, and contrabass flute. Similarly, it calls for a large array of pitched and unpitched percussion; some compositions concentrate on one family or style of percussion (e.g., resonant metallic percussion or drier rhythmic percussion), while others blend various types. The title of the first piece, Simultaneous Worlds, therefore proves an apt title for the entire program. This recording features compositions by Mark Engebretson, Alejandro Rutty, Carl Schimmel, David Maki, Jeff Herriot and John Allemeier. |
